AI Ethics.

Ryan-Jenkins_Associate Professor of Philosophy at California Polytechnic State University

Ryan Jenkins
Associate Professor of Philosophy,
Cal Poly
Senior Fellow,
Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group

Saturday, September 11th, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm PST

Primer: AI Ethics & Predictive Policing

This Bootcamp Primer: AI Ethics and Predictive Policing will introduce the 3 main pillars of artificial intelligence ethics such as Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency by exploring one of AI’s most controversial applications: so-called “predictive policing.”
Predictive policing is the use of AI to forecast when and where crimes will take place and distribute law enforcement resources accordingly.
But the practice has been criticized as being racist, opaque, and unaccountable. Join us for a discussion to explore whether these charges are justified.
This class will serve as an introduction to the history and applications of predictive policing, as well as an introduction to the issues of fairness, accountability, and transparency in artificial intelligence ethics, from the perspective of moral philosophy.
Instructor Bio: The course is taught by Dr. Ryan Jenkins. Dr. Ryan Jenkins is an associate professor of philosophy and a senior fellow at the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

Software Engineer at Airbnb

Friday, September 18th, 9:45 am – 10:45 am PST

Natural Language Processing (NLP) 101

In the class, we’ll go through some basic concepts of Natural Language Processing.
We’ll also demonstrate common applications of NLP through an open-source NLP library — spaCy and a Notebook service — Google Colab.
The class will cover the following topics:
1. What is Natural Language Processing
2. What can NLP be used for
3. How to analyze and visualize your corpus
4. How to build a basic NLP model
5. How to train and test your NLP model
This Master Class is taught by Alice Zheng, Software Engineer, Airbnb.
With a Master’s in language technologies from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Peking University, she has over 4 years of research/industry experience in Machine Learning/Natural Language Processing.
She is passionate about ML and NLP technologies as well as applying them to promoting social justice.

Data Science.

Brett-Drury

Brett Drury,
Senior Data Scientist at Deeper Insights

Friday, September 18th, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm PST

Data Preprocessing

Preprocessing is probably one of the most important parts of a Data Science project. Data that has not been preprocessed can have unforeseen consequences including bias on protected characteristics.
A good understanding of data preprocessing is a first step in producing a fair AI System.
In this Master Class, part of the Ethics4NextGen AI Bootcamp Series, you will learn about the basics of data pre-processing and how to use pre-processing to avoid accidentally producing a biased ML System.
This Master Class is taught by Brett Drury, who holds a PhD from the University of Porto and is a Senior Data Scientist at Deeper Insights.

Data Visualization.

Kevin Rose Dias

Kevin Rose Dias,
Senior Analyst, MRM

Friday, September 18th, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm PST

Quick and Easy Data Visualization on Power BI

What is your data trying to say to you?
How quickly can you find out?
Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence tool and service that enables you to create interactive visualizations on the fly.
This course will show you how easy and fun it is to build a data visualization dashboard using Power BI, that both you and an end user can extract limitless insights from.
This Master Class is taught by Kevin Rose Dias, Senior Analyst, MRM.

This Master Class will provide an introduction to the new open-source AI and ML tool, FiftyOne.
Eric Hofesmann, a machine learning engineer at Voxel51 will give a brief overview of the tools ecosystem so you can understand the important gap that FiftyOne fills.
He will demonstrate various use-cases of the tool through interactive demos, including loading and exploring visual datasets in common formats (COCO, VOC, CVAT, etc.) and using FiftyOne to evaluate object detections.
This Bootcamp will introduce the two easy steps for getting started with FiftyOne, and, time permitting, interactively get attendees set up with the tool. Finally, we will describe how to get support and help from us during ther Hackathon; we’re here to make your hacks successes.
Eric Hofesmann received his undergraduate degree in Physics and Computer Science at the College of Charleston and went on to get his masters from the University of Michigan in Computer Science with a specialization in Computer Vision. Friday, September 18th, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm PST

Introduction to API Development Using Flask and Python 3.X

For any website/mobile app, it is important for them to communicate with servers for either implementing Database CRUD Operations or getting inference from AI Models hosted on a cloud platform.
APIs help us do that.
Many people find it hard to work with APIs or develop APIs from the start, especially during hackathons where you’ve a strict time constraint.
Thus, this course aims to solve this problem by helping participants build basic APIs for their web/mobile apps.
